Review Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
For almost two years, CDProjektred has been working on errors in Cyberpunk 2077. And many of these mistakes even corrected. And in order to demonstrate the result of their work, they came up with an interesting maneuver – to warm up interest in the game, releasing anime based on.
Yes, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners – this is exactly anime. It was made by the Japanese Trigger Studio, which has previously created such series as Kill La Kill and Little Witch Academia. But also the studio is known for its work under the contract. Before cooperation with CDPR, the team worked with Lucasfilm on two episodes of the Mini-series “Star Wars: Visions” and made animation screensavers for several games, in particular to Indivisible.
Cooperation with prostects was very cramped, which is also seen in the credits where, among the scriptwriters and producers, the Japanese and Polish names flash, and as many familiar things in the series will be seen by those who played in Cyberpunk 2077.
Good morning, Night City!
The very first scene with cyber psychics is already cooling down to the promotional roller from 2013. And when the Brandans ends (because everything that happened was precisely the recording of the sensations of the mentioned cyber psycho), we immediately transfer to David Martinez Typical Apartment, which is no different from the “apartments”. Where you may have looked only a couple of times.
And so on. Japan-Town, Bar “at Lizzy”, bikers from the gang “Tiger claws”-recognizable places, characters and terms will occur at every step. So you will not have a doubt that the action takes place in Night City.
Even the interface elements from the game added. The incoming call indicator, switching the camera, during hacking you can notice the field from the mini-game ..
A separate moment for the envy of the https://nongamstop-casinos.uk/ players will be trips on the monorail. The very one that the prostects promised among the features of Night City, but never did. In general, the past history of Vi (even if not completely) the dose of nostalgia and deja Wu is provided.
However, this approach also has the opposite side. Those who did not play Cyberpunk 2077 may not immediately figure out what Brandans are. Yes, there will be details about their creation, but already somewhere in the 5-6 series. But what kind of woman nods the chapters approvingly.the hero (beast, the owner of the Club “Postmergy”) unfamiliar with the game will not recognize.
Although acquaintances with the world of Cyberpunk 2077 may have questions. For example, in one of the conversations, Devid calls his (future) roots “cyberpans”. Nobody called anyone in the game, but here it seems to be a term that is really used and is a synonym for “running along the edge” from the name. This is the name of mercenaries who live constantly at risk, taking up the most dangerous (but also the most profitable) offers from fixers and corporations.
The cyber psychosis itself in the game was shown for the most part with a fiction. All cyber-psychics from the corresponding quests turned out to be drug addicts, then inserted low-quality implants, or flew off the coils long before “cybernetization”. And the series, on the contrary, shows gradually developing symptoms. However, there is still no serious contradiction here-given what the “running” in the series stuff themselves and how they live, they have enough opportunities to “freight”.
The implant “Sandevistan” became much more fantastic. If in the game he simply includes a slope, then he turns the owner either into a flash or a neur of a “matrix”, capable of one jerk in a fraction of a second to run through a whole building or slip a crowd of guards, simultaneously shooting everyone. But what to do – these are the laws of the genre, where the visual, the atmosphere and drive at the forefront.
Form over the content
The work of the Trigger stage is generally known for their “prohibitive” style. Huge weapons, fantastic somersaults during fights, shots with “deformation” emphasizing especially emotional or humorous moments. Moreover, in the same Kill La Kill, the plot is also to substitute the visual – the story of the authoritarian academy and school uniforms giving superpowers.
In the case of Edgerunners, where the setting was already determined by the Poles and Michael Smot, everything is much more mundane. But bright colors, dizzying scenes and effects like the remaining trace of silhouettes, when the hero uses super-skill-are still present. And they look quite appropriate among neon advertisements by City City.
In some places I had the feeling that I was watching Akira or Babbleg Crisis. Or maybe metropolis? Or ghost in armor? Although most likely I have such associations simply because anime has long been setting the tone for the whole genre of Cyberpunk. At least its visual component. And Edgerunners will definitely put several design solutions in the piggy bank.
Blood fountains, when someone is demolished by someone-are clearly made under the influence of Oldskul, now this is not in fashion.
Trigger’s own style in “running along the edge” is especially felt in characters. Even David, who initially looks the most standard guy, after a couple of upgrades (and several weeks left behind the scenes) is heard in the shoulders and pumps up muscles – so why not visualization of the development of the character in RPG!
And the rest! Huge and pumped Maine, in fact at first, became a mentor for David, in a sense, even a father. Sharus technician Pilar, having fun partners, juggling everyone during parties. And his sister Rebecca, who in the later series becomes one of the closest people to David. No, not romantically, but as a close friend, better than the rest, when he has problems.
For Rebecca Trigger separate respect. After all, during the filming, some in the CDProjektred did not like its design-small growth, underdeveloped proportions, a young face. However, the Japanese refused to remake the character, one of them even answered the phrase “The Loli Must Stay”!
